Superfood smoothies

This month we show case 5 great new smoothies which contain nutrient packed superfoods.

These smoothies have been designed to:

  • taste great
  • contain a variety of nutrients: including vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants, protein and healthy fat
  • have reduced sugar content: as we all know too much sugar (even from fruits) is not good for us and prolonged high blood sugar levels could be a factor in the development of diabetes and other conditions.

Why reduced sugar  smoothies are better than high sugar smoothies

Eating too much sugar can increase weight, but could also lead to a number of serious health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and liver conditions.

The American Heart Association recommends no more than six teaspoons, or about 25 grams, of added sugars per day for women, and nine teaspoons, or about 36 grams, for men.  Added sugars are those which are added to many foods such  cola, candy, meals, snacks and lots more. They may even be added to foods that appear to healthy such as almond milk (and other non-dairy milks), granola, cereals and health drinks.

Naturally occurring sugars are those that occur naturally in foods such as fruits.

If you are like most Americans you will be exceeding these guidelines in just one meal!

Fruits are great for you but you need to watch your intake

Fruits contain a variety of vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants, enzymes and lots more and should definately be in your diet.

However what many people do not realize is that even naturally occurring sugars – including those from fruit – can contribute to your sugar levels and create damage.

Fruit contains a type of sugar called fructose and excess fructose consumption has been linked with a number of endocrine and metabolic problems. Excess fructose consumption has been linked with cancer of the pancreas. Please refer to the report published in the journal cancer research for more information.

We prefer to reduce the quantity of high sugar fruits in our smoothies and replace these with healthy plant based fats and protein such as: organic cold pressed coconut butter, organic chia seeds, organic pumpkin and sunflower seeds, and avocados.

Adding more healthy plant based proteins and fats to your smoothies

Organic  coconut butter is rich in nutrients which promote heart hearth and even weight loss and is also great for your skin and thyroid. It also contains lauric acid which is converted in your body to monolaurin. Monolaurin has anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-protozoa properties. We recommend cold press organic coconut oils which preserve nutrient levels.

Seeds such as chia, sunflower, pumpkin, almond, walnut and macadamia are great for your health. These little nutrition packed powerhouses contain healthy fats, minerals, vitamins and fiber. We recommend eating organic seeds which have not been exposed to pesticides.
